Conservation Breeds: SHAVE ’EM to SAVE ’EM • The Livestock Conservancy is an organization dedicated to saving domestic breeds of animals from becoming extinct; their “Shave ‘Em to Save ‘Em” program aims to help preserve these breeds by encouraging crafters to expand their woolly horizons. These four yarns are all from breeds that are threatened or even critically endangered. Learn more about the efforts to save these sheep at www.livestockconservancy.org.

HOW TO GRAFT TWO-SIDED LACE KNITTING TOP TO BOTTOM • Grafting is a joining method used when a visible, bulky seam would detract from the appearance (or comfort) of a knitted garment. When stitches are grafted, a tapestry needle is used to draw a strand of yarn through the live stitches on two separate pieces in such a way that the stitch pattern between the pieces is maintained and the join is completely invisible. Grafting is often the method of choice for joining the toes of socks, joining the two halves of a lace stole in the center, or joining the beginning and end of a cowl or a lace edging on a blanket. Grafting can also be used to repair areas on completed garments where several stitches have come undone and created a hole.

My FAVOURITE Sweater • Like many people, especially knitting people, I have a favourite sweater. This sweater caught me by surprise—I didn’t expect it to become my favourite. It’s acrylic, in shades of brown, black, green, and red. It’s intarsia. It has a halo of pilling on it that is never ending, no matter how much I try to eliminate it. How did this garment of polyacrylonitrile made by a veritable stranger become my most treasured and most often worn piece of clothing?
