BALTIMORE SAMPLER

CLEMATIS CIRCLE • This is a good starter design if you are fairly new to hand appliqué as there are not too many pieces. Stitch the leaves first as they are easier than the flowers.

ROSE WREATH • This block introduces two new techniques – fine stems and padded appliqué. Fussy cutting a multi-shaded batik was a great way to achieve shading on the rose and buds. The same batik also provided mauve for some of the irises too! This is the ideal type of print to look out for when browsing in quilt shops.

IRIS LYRE • The lyre design is the most complex of the designs – each iris has five separate petals and part construction is used for the leaves and “unit appliqué” for the buds. So, three new challenges – use the notes below to help you master these new techniques. The irises can be in a colour of your choice but purple and mauves links with the clematis block. Try to get a tonal contrast between the top and lower petals to give definition to the iris.
